How it Works

A funny thing happens with certain pairs of words or phrases. For example, take “dad bod” and “father figure.” The first words in each pair are synonyms, and the second words in each pair are synonyms, but when put together, they mean totally different things!

DoubleSwaps gives you a compound word or phrase. Use the clue to figure out another word or phrase made up of synonyms—but which means something else!

Think carefully about words that can have multiple meanings. If the answer is a compound word, put one word in each box. On Thursdays and Fridays, look out for weaker synonyms, reversed word order, less common phrases, and puns.
